Fresh BBQ Side Dishes for the Perfect Summer Feast

1. Herby New Potato Salad

Serves: 4–6

Ingredients

  • 750g baby new potatoes
  • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 2 tbsp chopped parsley
  • 1 tbsp chopped chives
  • Sea salt and black pepper

Method

Boil the potatoes until tender, then halve while still warm.

Mix together the olive oil, lemon juice and Dijon mustard before tossing through the potatoes with the fresh herbs. Season to taste and serve warm or chilled.

Perfect with: Steak, burgers, sausages and lamb chops.


2. Charred Sweetcorn with Garlic Butter

Serves: 4

Ingredients

  • 4 corn on the cob
  • 50g softened butter
  • 1 garlic clove, crushed
  • 1 tbsp chopped parsley

Method

Mix the butter with the garlic and parsley.

Grill the sweetcorn over the BBQ for 10–12 minutes, turning regularly until lightly charred. Spread generously with the garlic butter before serving.

Perfect with: BBQ chicken, ribs and burgers.


3. Watermelon, Feta & Mint Salad

Serves: 4

Ingredients

  • ½ watermelon, cubed
  • 150g feta, crumbled
  • Handful of fresh mint
  • Juice of ½ lime
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

Method

Combine all the ingredients in a serving bowl and drizzle with the lime juice and olive oil just before serving.

Perfect with: Lamb, chicken skewers and spicy sausages.


4. Creamy Lemon & Herb Slaw

A fresh, crunchy slaw that's lighter than traditional coleslaw and perfect alongside grilled meats.

Serves: 4–6

Ingredients

  • ¼ white cabbage, finely shredded
  • 2 carrots, grated
  • ½ red onion, finely sliced
  • 3 tbsp Greek yoghurt
  • 2 tbsp mayonnaise
  • Juice of ½ lemon
  • 1 tbsp chopped parsley
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • Salt and black pepper

Method

Mix the yoghurt, mayonnaise, lemon juice and Dijon mustard together.

Add the cabbage, carrot, onion and parsley, then toss until evenly coated. Season well and chill for at least 20 minutes before serving.

Perfect with: Burgers, pulled meats, sausages, BBQ chicken and steak sandwiches.


5. Grilled Courgette & Tomato Salad

Serves: 4

Ingredients

  • 2 courgettes, sliced lengthways
  • 200g cherry tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • Fresh basil
  • Sea salt and black pepper

Method

Brush the courgettes with olive oil and grill for 3–4 minutes per side until lightly charred.

Combine with the tomatoes, basil and balsamic vinegar, then season well before serving.

Perfect with: Steak, chicken thighs, pork chops and venison burgers.
