Organic Chicken vs Free Range: What’s the Difference?

When it comes to choosing better meat, labels like organic and free range are often used interchangeably—but the truth is, there are some important distinctions. At The Organic Butchery, we believe transparency matters, which is why we’re committed to supplying only 100% organic chicken, raised to the very highest standards from day one.
Free Range: A Step in the Right Direction
Free range chickens are given access to the outdoors, offering them a more natural life than those raised in intensive indoor systems. They typically have more space to move, opportunities to forage, and better welfare than standard supermarket poultry. While this is undoubtedly a step forward, free range standards can still vary widely. Outdoor access may be limited, diets are not necessarily organic, and synthetic chemicals or routine antibiotics are often still part of the system.
Organic: Raising the Bar
Organic farming goes far beyond free range. Certified organic chickens are raised in smaller flocks with far more space, both inside and outdoors, where they can roam freely on organic pasture. Their diets are 100% organic—free from GM crops, synthetic pesticides, or artificial fertilisers—and routine antibiotics are strictly prohibited. Organic standards also insist on slower-growing breeds, meaning the birds live longer, healthier lives that allow them to develop natural flavour and texture.
100% Organic From Day One
Here’s where it gets more complicated. Some farms are allowed to label chicken as “organic” even if the chicks were not raised organically from birth. This means the bird may only have been organic for part of its life. At The Organic Butchery, we hold ourselves to a higher standard: our chickens are organic from day one. From hatchling to fully grown bird, every stage of life is governed by strict organic principles. We believe this is the only way to guarantee true organic quality, better animal welfare, and the superior taste our customers expect.
Why Organic Matters
Choosing organic chicken is not just about taste—it’s about ethics, sustainability, and trust. By supporting organic, you’re backing a system that:
-
Works in harmony with nature by protecting soils, biodiversity, and local ecosystems.
-
Prioritises animal welfare with smaller flock sizes, organic pastures, and slower growth rates.
-
Provides clean, high-quality food free from artificial chemicals, additives, or routine antibiotics.
At The Organic Butchery, we’re proud to be uncompromising on this point. Organic isn’t a label we use lightly—it’s a promise of quality, integrity, and respect for the land and animals.
