Family Fun in the Kitchen: Crispy Pork Skin Puffs

Family Fun in the Kitchen: Crispy Pork Skin Puffs

At The Organic Butchery, we believe every part of the animal has its place in the kitchen — from prime roasting joints to the often-forgotten cuts that can be turned into something truly special. Pork skin is a brilliant example: it’s naturally high in protein, crisps up beautifully, and makes a delicious alternative to shop-bought crisps.

This recipe transforms simple pork skin into Crispy Pork Skin Puffs — a snack that’s not just tasty, but fun for the whole family to make together. With a little seasoning and creativity, you’ll have a bowl of crunchy bites perfect for lunchboxes, family movie nights, or weekend treats.

Crispy Pork Skin Puffs

Serves: 4–6 (snacking portions)
Prep time: 15 minutes (plus drying time)
Cook time: 20 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 500g pork skin (speak to us at The Organic Butchery for fresh, organic pork skin)

  • 1 tbsp sea salt

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • 1 tsp paprika (optional for colour and flavour)

  • A drizzle of mild olive oil

Fun Flavour Ideas:

  • Cheesy Dust: Toss with finely grated organic parmesan.

  • Sweet & Savoury: Try a light sprinkle of cinnamon sugar.

  • Herby: Add dried rosemary or oregano for a rustic twist.

Method:

  1. Prepare the pork skin:
Rinse the pork skin and pat it very dry. For extra crispness, leave it uncovered in the fridge for a few hours or overnight to dry further.

  2. Cut into shapes:
Using kitchen scissors, cut into fun bite-sized pieces — squares, triangles, or snack sticks.

  3. Season:
Rub lightly with olive oil, then sprinkle with salt, garlic powder, and paprika if using.

  4. Bake until puffy:
Arrange on a lined baking tray and bake at 200°C (fan 180°C) for 15–20 minutes, turning halfway, until golden and puffed.

  5. Add flavour:
While still warm, toss the puffs in your chosen seasoning.

  6. Cool & crunch:
Allow to cool for a few minutes so they crisp up fully — then enjoy!

A Butcher’s Tip

Turn this recipe into a family activity by creating a “flavour station”. Bake the pork skin plain, then let the children shake their portion in a paper bag with their favourite seasoning. It’s a fun way to get kids involved in the kitchen while showing them how versatile organic meat can be.
