Norfolk Black Heritage Organic Turkeys: A Truly Special Christmas Centrepiece

When it comes to Christmas, the centrepiece of the table is always one of the most important decisions you’ll make. At The Organic Butchery, we’re proud to recommend our Norfolk Black heritage organic turkeys as a premium choice for those who want nothing short of the very best for their festive feast.
Raised Just Around the Corner
Our Norfolk Black turkeys come from Wonnacott Farm, nestled in the heart of Devon and just around the corner from our own farm. This means travel miles are kept to an absolute minimum, something that’s not only better for the birds but also for the environment. Reducing travel stress is a key part of animal welfare, and it’s one of the many reasons we’re so delighted to partner with this farm.
A Heritage Breed with History
The Norfolk Black is one of the oldest turkey breeds in the UK, prized for its rich, full flavour and succulent meat. Known for its distinctive dark plumage and slower growth rate compared to commercial breeds, this heritage bird produces a depth of flavour that makes every bite memorable. It’s a breed steeped in tradition, making it a fitting choice for the most special meal of the year.
Diet That Makes the Difference
What truly sets these turkeys apart is their diet. At Wonnacott Farm, Rosie Yells and her family — who have been rearing turkeys for over 30 years — feed their birds a fully organic diet grown right there on the farm. Beyond this, the turkeys are free to forage as nature intended, roaming the fields and orchards to snack on berries and other natural treats. Perhaps most special of all is their time spent in the orchard, where they happily enjoy organic apples straight from the trees — a natural indulgence that adds character to their diet and, in turn, their flavour.
A Family and Community Effort
When we visited Wonnacott Farm, what struck us most was not just the care given to the turkeys, but the sense of family and community spirit that runs through the farm. Rosie, Kate & Robert are hands-on at every stage of the process, from rearing to finishing. One detail that resonated deeply with us was learning that the turkeys are plucked by hand. Rather than using noisy machines, the family and community come together in a calm, social environment to carry out this part of the process, making it a truly human, thoughtful effort that captures the Christmas spirit.
Why We Recommend Them
These Norfolk Black heritage turkeys represent everything we stand for at The Organic Butchery: premium quality, sustainable practices, and respect for animals, the land, and the community. Their rich flavour, organic lifestyle, and heritage pedigree make them a centrepiece worthy of any Christmas table.
If you’re looking for a Christmas dinner that’s truly exceptional, we can’t recommend these birds highly enough. With a Norfolk Black on your table, you’re not just serving a meal — you’re celebrating tradition, sustainability, and the very best of organic farming.
